Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory - Food safety

Good to know
In short- BSL-3 lab ready in 2027
- For safe research on high-risk pathogens
- Enhances food safety
- Scale up
By the end of 2027, Wageningen Food Safety Research (WFSR) will have a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) lab. This is a laboratory for research into and work with pathogens that can cause serious or fatal diseases and pose an increased risk of infection. Construction has started in May 2026.
What can you do at the BSL-3 laboratory?
A BSL-3 lab offers the opportunity to analyse emerging, high-risk foodborne (or feed-borne) pathogens, including multidrug-resistant microorganisms and viruses. The presence of these pathogens is expected to increase due to climate change, a changed food chain and globalisation.
