Biosafety Level 3-laboratory – Food safety

Good to know
In short- BSL-3 lab ready in 2027
- For safe research on high-risk pathogens
- Enhances food safety
Introduction
By the end of 2027, Wageningen Food Safety Research (WFSR) will have a BSL-3 (Bio Safety Level 3) lab. This is a laboratory for research into and work with pathogens that can cause serious or fatal diseases and that can be spread through inhalation.
What can you do at the BSL-3 laboratory?
Activities
A BSL-3 lab offers the opportunity to analyze emerging, high-risk foodborne (or feed-borne) pathogens, including multidrug-resistant microorganisms and viruses. The presence of these pathogens is expected to increase due to climate change, shifts in production methods, and global trade.
