- Master's in Data Science for Food and Health

“I chose Wageningen because it’s the best agricultural university in Europe and one of the top ones in the world. ”
My name is Nikos Fragkos, I’m 27 years old, and I have graduated from the MSc Data Science for Food and Health at Wageningen University & Research.
What inspired me to choose this program was the fact that it sits exactly at the intersection of two worlds I am deeply interested in: technology and the agri-food systems. I’ve always had a natural curiosity about technology, starting from using computers as a kid, to video games, and later to understanding how technology can be applied in real-world sectors like agriculture. During my bachelor’s in Agricultural Economics, this interest became more serious. A turning point for me was my BSc thesis in the Informatics Lab at the Agricultural University of Athens, where I worked with data and algorithms for the first time. That experience, combined with receiving a scholarship from the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation in Greece to study abroad, made the choice very clear.
What I really enjoy about this program is that it allows me to explore the full spectrum of data science applications in the food sector, from production all the way to consumer health. It’s exciting to see how data-driven solutions can support a sustainable and secure food future. At the same time, the program has been challenging. It’s definitely a marathon, not a sprint. I didn’t have a programming background when I started, so I had to put in extra effort to build strong foundations. But that challenge also motivated me: I’m enthusiastic about the development and potential of data science, and that keeps me going.
I chose Wageningen because it’s the best agricultural university in Europe and one of the top ones in the world. Studying here felt like the natural next step for someone who wants to work in food systems technological innovation. My experience so far has been very good. The program was new when I started, so some things were still being adjusted, but overall, it has been a great environment to study in.
Outside of studying, I was part of the water polo team and I love to travel, for example, visiting different Dutch cities on the weekends to explore the Netherlands. I also enjoy hanging out with friends and watching movies. What really makes me feel at home in Wageningen is the people. The friendships I’ve built here are a big part of my student life.
In the future, I hope to pursue a PhD on a topic related to AI in food systems. My MSc thesis focused on food fraud detection, and that’s an area I would like to explore even more. More broadly, I want to work on how data science can support the transformation and development of the entire food sector.
My advice to students choosing a program is simple: be passionate about what you study. That passion is what drives you through the challenges and helps you make the most out of your university experience.
