A healthy future for everything that lives

In the future, good health and wellbeing for everyone will no longer be a distant ambition, but a natural starting point. People, animals, plants and ecosystems will no longer be viewed separately, but understood as interconnected, and as a shared responsibility. And improvements in health will also make other sustainable development goals more attainable, such as poverty reduction, universal education and the protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems.

The food system will support a healthy and sustainable way of living. Everyone will have access to safe, healthy, affordable and enjoyable food. The healthy choice will have become the easy choice.
Livestock systems will prioritise animal health and welfare and fit better into the landscape. The type of livestock farming will be aligned with the local environment – for example, poultry farms will not be located in wet areas where migratory birds pass overhead. As a result, disease pressure will be lower and the risk of infectious disease transmission reduced.

Prevention will carry more weight than cure. Everyone will have the opportunity to live healthily. Infectious diseases will be closely monitored, allowing risks to be identified earlier and improving preparedness for pandemics. Healthy, resilient ecosystems will provide clean water, clean air, fertile soils and natural disease control. Diseases will not disappear, but the emphasis will be on reducing their impact and improving quality of life.

We will live in a world of resilient people, animals and ecosystems. The way our food systems are designed will make them safer for all forms of life – providing enough healthy food for people, minimising disruption to landscapes, and reducing the risk of disease emergence and transmission. The food system itself will function better thanks to lower disease pressure and will be able to produce sufficient safe and healthy food.
