(Medior) Ecological Genetics Technician (24–32 Hours per Week)

As a (Medior) Ecological Genetics Technician, your primary responsibility will be to perform, and where appropriate develop, molecular laboratory analyses for both population genetic research and (e)DNA-based biodiversity assessments (metabarcoding). Much of this work involves analysing samples of low quality and quantity, such as non-invasive animal samples, environmental DNA (eDNA), and ancient DNA. These analyses are conducted in laboratory facilities specifically designed for handling such material.

The Animal Ecology Team consists of approximately twenty-five researchers, laboratory staff, and field technicians specializing in mammal, bird, insect, reptile/amphibian, soil ecology, and ecological genetics research. From the DNA level to the landscape scale, we analyse ecological processes, species interactions, and relationships between species and environmental and management factors.

We carry out research for governments, land managers, NGOs, businesses, and projects funded through national and international scientific programs. Our work is focused on high-quality, independent research aimed at the conservation and management of wild fauna. Through applied research, we make our knowledge and expertise available to help preserve the quality of our natural environment, both now and in the future.

What sets us apart is our combination of desk studies, empirical research, and specialized laboratory facilities, including the Ecological Genetics Laboratory.

• A completed Bachelor’s degree (HBO level) in molecular biological laboratory research (e.g., Molecular Biology, Molecular Life Sciences, or an equivalent qualification), or in animal sciences with a molecular focus.
• Experience with a variety of DNA extraction protocols for both plant and animal material, including invasive and preferably also non-invasive samples (e.g., faeces, hair, and swabs).
• Experience with environmental DNA (eDNA) protocols, including DNA extraction and PCR setup, is highly desirable.
• Awareness of potential sources of contamination and cross-contamination, and knowledge of how to prevent them, is essential.
• Preferably experience with DNA processing for SNP analysis, amplicon sequencing, whole-genome sequencing, and/or genotyping-by-sequencing, including NGS library preparation strategies and sample multiplexing.
• Experience with sequence analysis, including sequence alignment and basic analysis of sequence data for applications such as phylogenetics, primer design, or DNA barcoding. Experience with Nanopore sequencing (MinION) and quantitative PCR (qPCR or ddPCR) is considered an advantage.
• A team player with strong communication and organizational skills. Proactive, flexible, resilient under pressure, and quality-oriented, with an affinity for ecological research and an interest in developing innovative methodologies and laboratory protocols.

We offer, depending on your experience, a competitive gross salary of between €3231,- and €4.929,- for a full-time working week of 36 hours, in accordance with the CLA Wageningen Research (scale 8 - 9). This position is for 24 - 32 hours. As for your contract, we initially offer a one-year contract that can be extended - if possible within (company) organizational circumstances - on good performance.
