Your job

Do you want to lead in a unique research environment where animal health and quality are very important? Wageningen Bioveterinary Research is looking for a Team Leader for the Runderweg location in Lelystad.

As Team Leader, you are responsible for the day-to-day operations at the Runderweg location. You manage two teams of biotechnicians (14 FTE) and a technical team (2 FTE), overseeing daily personnel matters, scheduling, housing & care of all animals, projects, health & safety-related issues, quality, audits (including AAALAC), and inspections.
You are present on the work floor, maintain oversight, and connect teams, projects, and locations. In your role as Team Leader, you report directly to the Head of the Animal Care and Biotechnology Department.

What You Will Do

  • Be the main contact for the Department of Animal Care & Biotechnology at the Runderweg site.
  • Lead and coach the (bio)technical teams.
  • Coordinate studies and plan staff, weekend shifts, and holidays.
  • Make sure studies, staff, and animals are safe and of high quality.
  • Prepare study calculations and complete study books and reports.
  • Monitor the financial progress of projects and close projects financially.
  • Ensure processes for biotechnology, building management, and staff and animal welfare meet legal and quality requirements.
  • Help with animal care and perform simple biotechnical tasks.

Your Team
You will lead two teams of biotechnicians (14 FTE) and one technical team (2 FTE).

Your qualities

You are someone who is connecting, organized, and hands-on, able to coach effectively, motivate teams, and inspire colleagues to achieve quality and results together.

Additionally, you possess:

  • A completed degree in Animal Management or a comparable field.
  • HBO-level thinking and working skills (higher professional education level).
  • Preferably in possession of an Article 13f.2 certificate (under the Dutch Experiments on Animals Act).
  • Flexibility and decisiveness.
  • Strong communication skills with colleagues, users, and external partners.
  • The ability and enthusiasm to work well in a team.
  • The ability to plan independently, prioritize, and switch between hands-on work and coordinating tasks.
  • Preferably some leadership experience (managing a group of more than 5 people).
  • Familiarity with the Dutch Experiments on Animals Act (Wod), European regulations, and quality standards (ISO9001, AAALAC).
  • Willingness to participate in weekend shifts.
  • Excellent command of Dutch, both spoken and written, is required. (B2) The role involves clear and effective communication with employees at different educational levels, as well as a solid understanding of Dutch legislation and regulations.
  • A good command of English (B2), both spoken and written, is required, particularly for reading documentation and participating in professional discussions.

Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) works towards a world where humans and animals coexist healthily. From our locations in Lelystad, we conduct high-quality applied research on animal diseases and zoonoses. The Animal Care & Biotechnology department supports this research with strictly managed, technically advanced animal facilities, in which you, as Team Leader, play a key role.

Depending on your experience, we offer a market-based salary of up to € 4,929 gross per month (scale 8–9 for a full-time 36-hour workweek, in accordance with the Wageningen Research Collective Labor Agreement), plus a supplement for weekend shifts. We offer a contract based on your current contract.
