The demands of internationalisation are increasingly a consideration for lecturers. However, as an experienced lecturer, further developing your lecturing skills requires insight and careful self-reflection. The goal is to provide the most effective learning experience for students of all backgrounds and cultures, without losing your unique voice and energy. The Lecturing in English blended course aims to do just that by offering lecturers the chance to reflect on their own practice at a time and place of their choosing.
This course is blended. This means:
- all materials are available online
- you plan the course yourself by studying at a time and place of your choosing
- you receive feedback from and interact with your teacher online
This fully prepares you to get the most from your face-to-face session at the end of the course.
Lecturing in English C1/C2 (CEFR)
The assignments throughout the course are designed to encourage you to think about how you lecture and what language you need to improve, as well as to provide insight into the demands of international students. All reflection and assignments receive considered feedback from our experts and there are also opportunities to discuss and share ideas with other course participants.
At the end of the course, you will have a face-to-face session with your supervising teacher who will review your performance and provide you with the tools you need for lifelong learning and development.
Setting the scene: The language you need to begin each lecture effectively and efficiently. In addition, Setting the scene will also help you to analyse your own technique for generating enthusiasm and engagement from the onset: how to use stress and pronunciation to effect tone and modulation.
Structuring a lecture: How to clearly structure each lecture. Structuring a lecture includes the language you need to clearly outline the goals and to communicate the planned structure of the lecture with your students. In addition, you will learn how to clarify and check whether the information has been imparted and how to finish on a strong note.
Answering questions & maintaining clarity: This module will give you the language you need to effectively answer questions clearly and coherently. In addition, Maintaining clarity reviews the language you need to impart specific knowledge via presentations, such as visuals and figures. This language development will help you to build the engagement and interaction which your students have with your material.
The international classroom: How attention to language can help foster and build good relationships within a classroom both between students and between the teacher and the students. In addition to language, The international classroom also looks at the different communication styles and expectations of students from different cultures. This understanding is vital to create a supportive, welcoming and productive learning environment.
