Alumniverhaal

Alumna Marije Broekhuijsen

Marije Broekhuijsen obtained a Bachelor and a Master in International Development Studies in Wageningen.

I like that I can influence things both on a national and international level.

She graduated in 2007 and started her international career after working in the Netherlands for several years. She has lived and worked in the Philippines and Mexico, amongst other places.

Marije currently works and lives in Ethiopia, where she is part of UNICEF’s WASH programme. WASH is an abbreviation for Water, Sanitation And Hygiene and the goal of the programme is to provide access to fresh, clean drinking water and working toilets for people there. Earlier this year, Marije also helped in South-Sudan, where she provided relief aid in one of the refugee camps, and ensured that people had enough water and toilets.

“I like that I can influence things both on a national and international level. You can see a clear link between policy and implementation and I find that incredibly interesting. I like being in contact with the people in the field, it’s a rewarding job.”
