Summary

Circular agriculture is seen as a key pathway
towards a more sustainable food future, but which circular initiatives truly
drive change? This PhD investigates the transformative potential of circular
agriculture initiatives through a new assessment framework for decision makers.
Applied to real-world cases, it maps the diversity and potential of circular
agriculture initiatives in the north of the Netherlands. By combining this
framework with a farm-level sustainability assessment, the research reveals a
combined overview of transformative potential and impact on economic, social,
and environmental sustainability. The study also examines how young farmers
perceive and implement circular practices, emphasising their crucial role in
shaping the transition. Together, these insights highlights where meaningful
progress is being made and where targeted support can help achieve a genuine
shift towards more circular- and sustainable farming.
