The exhibition entitled ‘The Insect Sentience Project’, by Bram van Oosten, is a bridge between art and science that addresses the complexity of capturing the essence of what it is like to be an insect.
This art brings attention to the intricacy of demonstrating that these beings have the capacity to feel pain an pleasure: i.e. that they are sentient. This makes insect sentience enigmatic, and the world of insects mystifying. Yet insect farming, the use of insects in research and the global use of pesticides make insect sentience and welfare weighty societal concerns.
