Summary

This thesis compiled and studied the past trends of natural disturbances in European forests, such as fire, windstorms and insect outbreaks. By doing so not only enabled to understand past disturbance regimes, but also assess the impact disturbance pressure had on forest functioning. Building upon these findings, future disturbance projections under climate change are modelled for windstorms and fires, and alternative forest management were tested in the models to improve forest resilience to disturbances under climate change.
