The terrestrial biosphere plays an important role in the global carbon cycle, and carbon storage on land is frequently considered as an option for climate change mitigation. The success of possible mitigation options on land is dependent on accurate monitoring of land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) and their effects on the carbon cycle. While countries report LULUCF emissions with set guidelines, academics are continuously developing novel technologies with the aim of improving this monitoring process. These include high-resolution models, novel measurements, and remote sensing. How do we bring these scientific developments closer to the operational practice of LULUCF reporting?

We invite a broad group of professionals working on LULUCF monitoring, specifically operational specialists and academics, to discuss this question together. In five sessions, we move from methodological development to monitoring in practice.
