WIAS Science Day 2024

Animals in a changing world

Each year WIAS organizes the WIAS science day for the WIAS community. This
year the overarching theme is “Animals in a changing world”. Climate change,
biodiversity loss, and critical views on animal husbandry and consumption of
animal products, force us to think about our role as animal scientists and the
contributions we make in animal science. As a result, the vibrant WIAS community
is adapting to these developments and deploys the latest developments in AI and
sensor technology to study animals, understand their needs and behavior and their future role in circular farming systems and biodiversity. In this edition of the WIAS Science Day, we explicitly invite PhD candidates, postdocs and early-stage tenure trackers to present their groundbreaking research to the wider WIAS community.

Programme

Keynote Speakers
We are pleased to announce that Prof. Dr. Liesbeth Sterck from the Animal Behaviour & Cognition group, Utrecht University will open the conference with a keynote lecture, entitled: “The importance of social groups in animal welfare: a primate example”

Parallel sessions and poster sessions
Researchers are asked to submit an abstract on one of the following three themes:
1) Animal Friendly Livestock Farming System, 2) Behavior and Biology of
Animals and 3) Human Animal Health Interactions. Forty-eight abstracts will be selected for oral presentation in three parallel sessions. The three accompanying poster sessions will be held during breaks, but all posters will be on display throughout the entire meeting. The full programme can be found here.

Abstract submission

We ask all PhD candidates attending this conference to submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation during the conference. Postdocs and junior tenure trackers are strongly encouraged to submit abstracts as well. Please indicate on the abstract form if you prefer an oral or poster presentation and indicate which theme corresponds to your research. Selection committees will select speakers for the oral presentations. Submit your abstract by following this format and upload it via the registration form before 10 March 2024.

Registration and fees

Registration is open. Please register here!
The registration deadline is 24 March 2024. The registration fee for all participants is €100 for the full day including lunch, dinner and evening programme.

Cancellation conditions
Due to high costs for catering, and to avoid food waste, we employ a strict cancellation policy:

• Cancellation free of charge up to April 1.
• In case of cancellation after April 1, but prior to the conference day, the whole fee will be charged.
• In case of no-show/no cancellation you will be charged the registration fee plus an additional administration fee of €50.
