Research and the UN SDGs

In September 2015, the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a new global sustainable development agenda for 2030. They are promoted as the global sustainable development goals. There are 17 objectives and 169 underlying targets to operationalize these goals.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality finances research that can contribute to more sustainable agriculture, better nature protection, food safety and food quality. The ministry was interested in how the research funded by them relates to the 17 sustainable development objectives, what contribution this research can make to the objectives and how this contribution might be increased.

Relationship between research and SDGs

On the basis of a number of appealing examples, the relationship between research and the sustainable development objectives in this brochure is explained in more detail. The brochure also contains an analysis of the funding and publications of the research carried out by Wageningen University and Research in recent years on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. Later, more detailed advice will follow based on the findings of the research.
