The Department of Human Nutrition and Health is looking for participants for the Bitter Study

Caffeine can play an important role in the pleasantness of some food products. Participate in the bitter study and help increase our insight into the effect of caffeine on bitter sensations. With these data we hope to provide advice to improve future food products.

Profile participants:

We are looking for 42 healthy men and women that are:

  • Between 18 to 55 years old
  • Daily coffee consumers (At least 2-3 cups a day)
  • Non-smokers
  • Not hypersensitive to fragrances and flavourings
  • Not pregnant
  • Not employees of the Human Nutrition and Health department

About the research

The research will take place over 3 different periods in April and May of 2019. Dates include: 1-12 April, 15-26 April and 29 April to the 10th of May. You must participate in all days within a period, including weekends. If you decide to participate, you can indicate which period you prefer.

You will need to come to our laboratory on the first and last day; all other study procedures can be completed at home. For the 10 days at home, we will give you a bittersweet drink and a capsule to consume at a specific time in the morning (08.30). You will need to avoid eating or drinking anything (other than water) before consuming this drink. All drinks and capsules will be given to you during your 1st laboratory visit. In the two laboratory visits, you will taste various drinks and complete several questionnaires. These visits will take no more than 30 minutes.
