MSc thesis topic: Improving mobile LiDAR pointclouds in an urban environment

Many fields of research make use of LiDAR, one of those fields is urban monitoring. Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) has been used for monitoring urban for many years. Monitoring urban environments is important and the 3D representation can give invaluable insight in to their function and the effects of climate change.

The technology surrounding LiDAR and TLS has seen much innovation. Mobile LiDAR scanners can be used for Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS). These instruments are portable, continually acquire data and could prove very useful in circumstances where traditional TLS systems face difficulty limitations. However, the precision of MLS in comparison to TLS dictates the usefulness of the mobile systems in measuring and monitoring urban environments

Two LiDAR datasets (MLS and TLS) were collected in 2022 in a street in Leeuwarden. Datasets have been pre-processed but not aligned into each other.

Objectives and Research questions

  • Understand the relevance of using mobile LiDAR in urban environments.
  • Improve mobile LiDAR pointclouds using a terrestrial LiDAR pointcloud as reference in two urban setups (a street and a park).

Requirements

  • Basic understanding of LIDAR technology and their use in urban environments
  • Programming skills
