Education of Human and Animal Physiology

Human and Animal Physiology is committed to teach challenging and inspring science to BSc, MSc and PhD students.
Theses
The Human and Animal Physiology Group offers possibilities to participate directly in physiological studies with humans and animals. Other thesis research focuses on molecular cell physiological research and in-depth investigations of samples from human and animal studies using a wide variety of biochemical, molecular biological and histological methods for comprehensive mechanistic and physiological interpretation.
For more information on BSc or MSc theses you can contact office.hap@wur.nl. An experimental thesis requires a minimum of 24 EC.
BSc thesis
As a BSc student, you can perform a literature study related to the current physiological research performed at the Human and Animal Physiology Group. Research questions focus on our research aims and thereby contribute to comprehensive mechanistic and physiological interpretation of current scientific findings.
At Human and Animal Physiology, we have extensive expertise in performing interventions studies focused on the assessment of energy metabolism, integrated with metabolic, functional genomic and immune-histochemical analysis. We perform short-term interventions and cross-sectional mechanistic studies in humans, detailed short and long-term dietary interventions in model animals (mice, pigs and drosophila), and detailed mechanistic studies in tissues as well as primary and cultured cells.
MSc thesis
Human and Animal Physiology offers MSc thesis projects which are directly involved in (ongoing) molecular and physiological research. Our research is focused on energy metabolism including intermediary metabolism as well as mitochondrial metabolism and physiology, which are central components of diet- and age-related diseases and affect organ and tissue function.
Our aims
- To gain comprehensive mechanistic and physiological insights in energy metabolism related to health and organ functioning
- To obtain methodology and data to substantiate the efficacy of interventions, compounds and foods to improve metabolic health
To achieve this, we perform experimental research in humans, model animals, tissues and cells, using state-of-the-art physiological, molecular, biochemical, histological and bioinformatics tools.
MSc internships
Human and Animal Physiology supports MSc internships in physiology and molecular physiology around the world. An MSc internship provides students with an opportunity to broaden scientific and personal horizons and to strengthen scientific or professional skills outside Wageningen University & Research. A host-organisation in the Netherlands or abroad provides a 'taste' of different working environment or potential future employment, new scientific knowledge and techniques as well as new contacts.
