Biodiversity

Biodiversity is a measurement of variation that can be assessed at the genetic, species and ecosystem level. At Marine Animal Ecology we perform fundamental research to answer questions such as how biodiversity is generated and maintained and what the underlying processes are. We also develop monitoring tools to adequately assess diversity.

Projects

For the Biodiversity Sensing Box project, researchers are developing a device that independently takes underwater samples for DNA analysis and observes with a camera and a hydrophone.

At Marine Animal Ecology (MAE), we develop and apply passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) methods for biodiversity monitoring and we study how we natural of human-made sounds influence the behaviour of marine animals, especially the attraction and settlement of larvae.
