Introduction
An increasing number of researchers in the life sciences work with data in which observations are not independent. Examples include hierarchical (nested) data, repeated measurements on the same plant, animal, or person, or measurements taken within the same location, batch, or experiment.

This course is intended for researchers in the life sciences who work with experimental or observational data and wish to deepen their understanding of linear mixed models. The course is relevant for professionals from industry, government, research institutes, and higher education.

Knowledge of basic statistics (hypothesis testing, linear models, regression and ANOVA) is necessary. You can always contact us to inquire whether you have the required prior knowledge.

  • Start with the basics of Linear Mixed Models and apply them to split-plot designs.
  • Learn to build mixed models, from a random-intercept model to a random-slopes model, in RStudio.
  • Compare models and interpret the results.
  • Analyse repeated measurements and explore more complex mixed models.

Day 1: Tuesday 6 April 2027

Introduction to mixed models

  • Refresher on linear regression, classical ANOVA and ANCOVA, including their key assumptions.

  • Independence, experimental units and pseudoreplication: recognising dependent/hierarchical and repeated data structures in life-science research.

  • Introduction to linear mixed models (LMM): fixed effects vs random effects.

  • A special mixed model: Split-plot design.

Day 2: Wednesday 7 April 2027

Building linear mixed models stepwise

  • From a random-intercept baseline to a random slopes model.

  • Variance components, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), model comparison and BLUPs.

  • Interpretation of fixed-effect estimates, confidence intervals and comparing means.

Day 3: Thursday 8 April 2027

Complex mixed models

  • Repeated measurements: analysing data measured in time on the same unit in a mixed model.

  • Mixed models with more random and fixed terms, interactions and random slopes.

  • Brief outlook on generalised linear mixed models.

This course is a follow-up on the Dutch-taught course ' Toegepaste Statistiek in R-Studio' , which takes place on five separate days at Wageningen Campus between 11 February and 17 March 2027.
