Do you want to improve your Dutch language skills even further, for example so you can talk with colleagues or friends about your research, arts and politics? Would you like to participate in discussions at work or with your acquaintances? Do you think it would be fun to be able to talk with your neighbours, for instance about your living environment? Would you like to broaden your vocabulary, practice communication skills and also learn what makes things typically Dutch? Then take part in the Advanced Dutch 1 course.
Who is this course suitable for?
The course is for international employees, PhD candidates or expats who already have prior knowledge of Dutch and who want to learn Dutch for social purposes on and outside their workplace.
Admission requirements
From on the way to B1 to B1
You need prior knowledge of Dutch to start. If you have completed Intermediate Dutch 3, you can participate in Advanced Dutch 1. You can also start if you have studied Dutch before, for example, in your own country. Schedule an online intake via into@wur.nl so we can determine which level is suitable.
This course will help you reach B1 language level. After completing this course, you can continue learning Dutch with our Advanced Dutch 2 course (level: on the way to B2). Learn more about the language levels (CEFR).
What do the classes cover?
Skills
After this course, you will be able to:
- express whether you agree or disagree with someone;
- explain your opinion;
- talk about your relationships with colleagues, family, friends and/or your partner;
- talk about people’s characteristics;
- give advice;
- recommend people or things;
- explain why you want to exchange or return something;
- have conversations about money and the economy;
- explain why you do or do not want to, or are unable to, do something;
- have conversations about art and culture;
- write detailed texts containing descriptions and specifics.
Grammar & culture
Grammar is always taught within a communicative context and in practical situations.
For example: when you learn to talk about relationships, you also learn about relative pronouns, as knowledge of this grammatical topic is useful and relevant for describing complex matters such as relationships in a nuanced and structured way at a higher level.
Culture and history influence a country’s language. That is why this course also focuses on interesting and relevant aspects of Dutch culture and history. Knowledge of these topics makes it easier to understand Dutch people and their reactions.
For example: What kind of gestures do Dutch people use to emphasise what they are saying? How common are these gestures internationally? How openly do Dutch people talk about money? What do Dutch people expect from foreigners living in the Netherlands?

This course is offered several times a year in two variants: the standard track and the fast track.

The course price does not include course materials.
Payment: We will send you an invoice by email on the day the course starts.
The course consists of 14 lessons of 1.5 hours per week. You should also allow for 3 to 4 hours of self-study per week to reach the desired level. The maximum number of participants per group is 18 in a face to face course, and 15 in an online course.
If you register for an online course, you follow all classes online using the Virtual Classroom in Brightspace. If you choose a face-to-face course, all classes will take place at Wageningen Campus.

After the course you will receive a certificate from Wageningen in’to Languages, provided you have attended at least 80% of the classes. Would you like to continue improving your language skills? It is possible to proceed into Advanced Dutch 2.
