Wageningen University & Research develops biological solutions for the sustainable control of pests and diseases. With expertise in natural enemies, biological control agents, biopesticides and integrated strategies, we support companies and growers in building resilient cropping systems that rely less on chemical inputs.

Biological crop protection is a key research area at Wageningen University & Research (WUR). Using our Select-Biocontrol approach, we identify and develop new biological control agents and biopesticides. Large numbers of microorganisms and natural enemies are screened for effectiveness, safety and scalability. In state-of-the-art research facilities – including quarantine greenhouses, climate rooms and field sites – we assess their performance under practical conditions. We also design ICM strategies that combine biological solutions with preventive measures and smart monitoring.
Our diagnostic tools, ranging from molecular tests to innovative spore traps with image recognition, enable early detection and targeted application. Together with growers, companies and policymakers, we ensure both practical and regulatory implementation — from proof of concept to market introduction. This contributes to sustainable cropping systems that meet the highest future standards.
