Wageningen Plant Research develops crops, cultivation systems and microbial production systems that deliver high-quality, plant-based raw materials for food, ingredients, materials and chemicals. With expertise in breeding, biotechnology and value-chain development, we help businesses make their production more sustainable and replace fossil resources.

Plants act as natural factories for a vast range of valuable compounds. Wageningen University & Research combines knowledge of plant biology and biochemistry with modern biotechnology to develop crops that produce specific bioactive compounds — from natural rubber to antioxidants — and to generate these substances through microbial production platforms.

By fine-tuning cultivar selection and cultivation conditions, we improve both yield and quality, even without genetic modification. We can also transfer biosynthetic processes from plants to microbial systems, enabling the ex planta production of high-value plant compounds.

Our integrated approach connects plant biology, biochemistry, biotechnology and microbiology with industrial production and chain development. Working closely with companies and public authorities, we create circular value chains that make full use of the biochemical diversity offered by the plant kingdom.

  • Breeding crops with unique plant compounds: development of varieties that produce specific bioactive components or valuable materials such as natural rubber, antioxidants and flavouring substances.
  • Metabolic engineering and biotechnological production: application of biotechnological methods to unravel, optimise or transfer biosynthetic processes from plants to microbial platforms, enabling the production of a wide range of plant-derived compounds for different applications.
  • Optimising cultivation for bioactive compounds: research into cultivation factors — light, nutrients and water — that enhance the production of target compounds.
  • Circular valorisation of plant residues: conversion of residual biomass into raw materials for new products such as Rubisco protein, flavourings, colourants or natural preservatives.
  • Collaboration and value-chain development: joint development of profitable, circular value chains for sustainable raw materials in cooperation with industry and government.
