I am a fish ecologist specialising in fish migration and a PhD candidate at the Aquaculture and Fisheries Group (AFI). My PhD is involved in the ‘Ruim baan voor Vissen 2’ project where I aim to gain further insight in the relation between fish migration and the role of habitats from sea to source. This study is conducted in the north-eastern part of the Netherlands of Westerwolde, the Westerwoldse Aa and its tributaries. The longitudinal connectivity in this system has recently been restored along with the re-meandering of once channelled streams. The results of the project give us the possibility to identify bottlenecks in the migration routes and life cycles of both diadromous and potamodromous species. In the end this may contribute to establish guidelines on cost efficient nature restoration efforts to help to restore the heavily fragmented rivers over the world.

My direct supervisor is Dr. Ir. Leo Nagelkerke
