Project

Assess risk of benthic pollutants for marine environmental quality and seafood safety; Yangtze delta region

The Yangtze delta estuarine region is heavily polluted from industrial development. However, there is a lack of attention on the impact on benthic animals and the ecosystem.

Motivation and aims

A diversity of toxic compounds existing in ecosystems have consequences on benthic ecoystem services, such as species availability, seafood safety, and whole ecosystem stability. Therefore, this research aims to assess the risk of benthic pollutants for marine environmental quality and seafood safety in the Yangtze river delta region.

Research objectives

1. Perform field research to assess the impact of benthic pollutants on local marine communities.
2. Develop and validate small scale bioassays to assess the ecotoxicity of POPs.
3. Assess benthic seafood safety of accumulated toxic compounds.
