Physical food safety

About this expertise
In short- Farm to fork
- Plastic, glass, metals
- Bone fragments
- Toxic seeds
Wageningen Food Safety Research (WFSR) researches the safety of our food every day. We also do so in the field of physical hazards. These are objects or materials that can accidentally end up in food. Think of plastics, pieces of glass, metals or toxic seeds. Consumption of these can pose a risk to human and animal health.
About this expertise
Based on the motto 'farm-to-fork', we look at all steps in the food chain. For instance, some weeds in the field that come with the harvest may produce toxic seeds, or grain may be affected with a fungus. Something may go wrong during production, causing a screw to enter the food.
We also examine animal feed for the presence of metals, plastics, glass or other packaging residues. In addition, there are physical hazards that may not pose an immediate danger to humans or animals, but may be carriers of chemicals or pathogens. In animal feed, for example, we look for bone fragments that may contain the proteins that cause mad cow disease. This is how we work hard to ensure a safe food chain.
