Introduction

With our in-vitro digestion models, we help food companies understand how products are digested and absorbed. These insights are essential for developing healthy, nutritious, and more sustainable products that support health throughout all stages of life.

About in-vitro digestion systems

About the service

Consumers are increasingly seeking foods that not only promote health but also fit within conscious and more sustainable lifestyles. For food companies, this means that understanding how products are digested and absorbed is essential for optimizing formulations and convincingly substantiating health benefits.

With our in-vitro digestion models, we accurately simulate digestion from the mouth to the large intestine and can tailor the models to specific populations, such as infants or older adults. This enables you to objectively demonstrate how macro- and micronutrients are broken down and absorbed, measure the impact of formulations, processing steps, or alternative protein sources, and scientifically substantiate the nutritional or health benefits a product provides.

In our studies, we use several methods, including the globally recognized INFOGEST (static in vitro simulation) model and protocols, NERDT (stomach simulation), and SHIME (simulation of the stomach, small intestine, and colon). With SHIME, we can also map interactions with the gut microbiome. When additional validation is required, we can link in-vitro findings to human studies. This unique combination of in-vitro and in-vivo expertise within a single organization gives companies reliable insights into how products behave in the body, including digestion, absorption, and nutritional effects.

Benefits of in-vitro digestion models

Benefits
  • Fast and cost-efficient quality screening
Save time and costs with early insights into the digestibility, absorption, and nutritional quality of products and ingredients.
  • Improved formulation and product stability
Optimize composition, shelf life, and product performance, from plant-based alternatives to ingredients produced through precision fermentation.
  • Support for health claims
Use reliable, reproducible data to substantiate nutritional claims and support novel food applications.
  • International standardization with INFOGEST
Work according to the globally recognized protocol for in-vitro digestion, ensuring results that are internationally comparable and accepted.
  • Target-group-specific product development
Generate insights to develop formulations for vulnerable groups, such as children, older adults, and people with medical conditions, as well as for consumers with specific health goals.
