Flow Modelling and Control in UV disinfection for Water Treatment

For water treatment, UV-disinfection is one of the treatment steps recently introduced in Dutch water treatment. It has several advantages with respect to the (little) amount of by-products, disinfection capacity and maintenance. In water treatment, there are typically high throughputs needed due to large demands of clean water. Hence, there is a strong need of advanced control strategies to reduce energy costs , while ensuring the water purity level.

The objective is to model the resulting flow patterns and biomass growth using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) and model reduction techniques, such that advanced model-based control is possible.
