Intensive summer course Social Dutch 1
Are you an international student at Wageningen University & Research? Would you like to learn Dutch in one week to speak with your fellow students and your teachers or carry on a basic conversation with your neighbours? Then our intensive summer course Social Dutch is just the thing for you!
Target group
The course is geared towards bachelor’s and master’s students of Wageningen University & Research who do not speak Dutch and who are interested in learning the language for social purposes.

Entry level: A0 (CEFR)
Final level: halfway to A1 (CEFR)
Course content
The main goal of this course is to learn to communicate in Dutch in simple, everyday situations.
What will this course teach you?
Once you have completed the course, you will be able to:
- to introduce yourself/someone else;
- tell someone where you are from;
- ask someone where they are from;
- spell your name, address and city;
- explain how you are doing and ask someone how they are doing;
- explain what you study and ask what someone else studies;
- talk about your hobbies;
- invite someone to do something;
- talk about what you like/don’t like;
- ask someone what they enjoy doing;
- talk about your family;
- describe someone’s personality and appearance;
- talk about your daily activities;
- ask for the time and tell someone the time;
- ask and explain what’s happening;
- make an appointment;
- hold a conversation in a shop;
- ask where something is and explain where people/things are;
- ask the price of a product.
Once you have completed the course, you will know:
- numbers up to 100;
- the days of the week;
- the months of the year.
Grammar is secondary to speaking and vocabulary building. Only basic grammar will be treated, such as the main sentence structure and the conjugation of verbs in the present and past tense.
The lecturer will speak Dutch as much as possible during the course.
Admission requirements
No prior knowledge of the Dutch language is required for Social Dutch 1. If you want to check whether this course is suitable for your level and your study goals, contact us at into@wur.nl.
If German is your native language, you have the option to start with Social Dutch 2 right away, on the condition that you independently study chapters 1 through 5 of the course book prior to the first class.
Prior to the course start participants will receive a short self-study package with preparatory exercises. All participants are expected to complete the exercises before the course start. This will take about 1 hour.

Location
If you register for an online course, you follow the course entirely online using the Virtual Classroom in Brightspace. If you choose a face-to-face course, the classes will take place at our location: Forum, Wageningen Campus.
Number of meetings
The course runs for 1 week. You will have two classes per day, 4.5 hours in total.

25 hours of self-study in total.

Certification
You will receive a certificate from Wageningen in’to Languages if you attended at least 80% of the lessons. After completing Social Dutch 1 you can register for our Intensive summer course Social Dutch 2 or the regular Social Dutch 2 course.

* The courses Social Dutch 1 & 2 are free for students who attend 80% of the classes (8 of the 10). If a student fails to meet this attendance requirement, they will receive a €90 invoice at the end of the course.
