Optimal Experimental Design for Distributed Systems
In daily life, one faces distributed processes almost everywhere. For control applications (e.g. in the food industry or environmental/bio-process engineering), it is sometimes needed to model these spatial distributions to enhance the final product quality and/or reduce (energy) costs. It would be interesting to find out where one should place sensors and/or controllers, how 'rich' the input signal should be, etc., in order to maximize the information needed to obtain accurate observers and/or controllers in convection/diffusion type models. An additional challenge is to utilize as much physical knowledge as possible.
Possible applications are: (1) a storage room for bioproducts or (2) a UV-disinfection reactor for water treatment / food industry.
