Tessa and Jesper – MSc Biobased Sciences
Tessa and Jesper studied together Biobased Technology at the Avans University of Applied Sciences in Breda. Both of them are now students of the MSc programme Biobased Sciences.
We started studying the Plant Sciences programme in Wageningen, but we also took courses from the upcoming Biobased Sciences master’s. “I like the interdisciplinary approach of the programme since I had difficulties choosing between specialising more towards biology or technology orientated subjects,” Jesper says.
“Plenty of Biobased technologies are feasible right now. We only need people and companies to embrace them”
The Biobased and circular economy is an upcoming market with a growing demand for professionals in this area. Tessa adds: “At the end of our studies at Avans, almost all of the students who weren’t continuing with a master’s degree, had job offers”.
What made you interested in the Biobased Sciences Field?
What sparked our interest in this field is that due to the broad application of Biobased sciences in society, students have versatile career options. “Especially large companies are interested in turning their low-value rest streams of one product into high-end applications for another,” Tessa says. “Often, the implementation of sustainable recycling pathways busts when encountering conservative policies,” Jesper adds. “It is not allowed, for example, to use certain waste streams to produce products for human consumption.”
Why did you decide to study at Wageningen University?
“All of our teachers and supervisors wholeheartedly recommended the WUR.” Jesper added that one of his supervisors even jokingly said he’d “break his arms and legs” if he’d chose another university in the Netherlands.
