In general, my research is about plant growth and development at different scales. The common denominator is that I use a range of mathematical and computational methods and that I am chasing the deeper questions of how and why plants grow the way the do. Currently, I focus on cell biological processes as well as developmental decisions at the organ/tissue level. From a mathematical point of view, I am interested in how large numbers of molecules or cells together make decisions and shape plant growth and/or development. This more abstract way of thinking sometimes offers surprising insights on apparently unrelated topics. At the same time, I strongly value my collaborations with experimentalist, because in the end, my main interest is the real biology.

Here in Wageningen, I am involved in the teaching of various mathematics courses. If you are a student and are interested in the combination of mathematics and biology, it will strongly benefit you if you gain as many mathematical skills as possible during your studies.
