My research focuses primarily on crisis management and disaster response. I am interested in the implementation of these activities by specialized crisis organizations (e.g. fire services, police, emergency trauma teams, NGOs, military). To this end, I have studied crisis professionals' sensemaking in chaotic situations, how authority and improvisation are enacted at the frontline, the role of team relations and organizational structures, and how different actors coordinate their crisis activities. I also study community resilience and disaster justice to explore how we can make disaster management more equitable and fair. My empirical research includes studies on humanitarian relief missions, search and rescue activities in the aftermath of disaster, and crisis response operations.
