Associate professor - Electrified Interfaces in Environmental Technology

My research focuses on understanding and improving environmental separation processes for water treatment, water reuse, and resource recovery.

A central theme in my work is the role of interfaces in determining how ions and molecules are transported, separated, adsorbed, or transformed in environmental technology. By combining experiments and theoretical modelling, I aim to develop a mechanistic understanding of these processes and use this knowledge to improve environmental technologies.

My research focusses on electrochemical separation technologies, membrane processes, adsorption technologies, PFAS removal, and resource recovery from water streams. Although these applications are diverse, they are connected by common questions about transport, selectivity, and interfacial phenomena.

Current research in my group focuses on four interconnected questions: how local chemical environments can be engineered to improve separations and reactions; how selectivity at interfaces can be understood and controlled; how environmental complexity influences process behaviour; and how predictive theories can be developed for environmental separation processes.

In addition to leading my own research programme, I am co-lead of the NWO Perspectief programme BlueVantage and contribute to other national collaborations that bring together researchers, water utilities, companies, and public partners to address long-term challenges in water treatment and sustainable resource management.

I teach Environmental Electrochemical Engineering and Colloid Chemistry and supervise PhD candidates and MSc students working on environmental separation science.
