Nitrogen deposition and climate change lead to soil acidification and desiccation. As a result, the vitality of forests and soils is declining sharply in the Netherlands. Also in De Hoge Veluwe National Park, where spruce trees (Picea abies) are already succumbing. Now it is important to consider which future climate-resistant forests we can plant.

Therefore, different tree species were planted with rich litter in De Hoge Veluwe National Park. We are also testing different treatments to improve the soil, including rock dust and soil inoculation. However, it is unclear what processes will take place in the soil during these applications.

So my research focuses on the role of soil biodiversity in forest restoration. Soil biodiversity plays a key role in forest for example, releasing nutrients that plants can use for growth.
