Samenvatting

In this pilot study it was investigated whether genetic research can be used for more accurate estimates of numbers and population dynamics of wild boar (in North Brabant and Limburg) as a modification of the traditional capture-mark-recapture method. For this purpose, droppings samples and tissue samples (from shooting and road casualties) were collected in 2 areas. Of the dropping samples, 46% resulted in a successful DNA profile, of the tissue samples this was 98%. This resulted in 64 unique DNA profiles (individuals) based on faecal samples and 332 profiles based on tissue samples. In only six cases, an individual was identified first through a faecal sample and then in a tissue sample. This number of finds was much smaller than expected and turned out to be too few to provide a reliable estimate of the numbers and population dynamics in the areas.
