This master has three specializations: Aquaculture, Marine Resources and Ecology and Marine Governance.
This field deals with the culture of numerous aquatic organisms (such as finfish, shrimp, shellfish, ornamental fish, corrals, sponges and algae) in a wide range of culture environment (from sea enclosures to semi-extensive ponds and high-tech recirculation systems). It requires a thorough knowledge and skills to maintain the biological, physical and chemical integrity of water bodies and insight in economic and social driving factors. The learning outcome of this specialization is to design optimal and sustainable production of fish and other marine organisms in a global perspective.
Marine Resources and Ecology
This specialization focuses on the sensitivity of marine communities in relation to human interventions, including climate change, fisheries and habitat destruction. Sustainable management of the living resources in the sea include models of population dynamics and fishing yield, international regulations, management tools and economic driving forces. It also requires insight on the ecological processes, that form the basis for marine food chains, the interaction between species and the functioning of the different ecosystems. This is summarized in the learning outcome: to evaluate limiting factors in order to be able to contribute to an improved biodiversity, environmental quality and sustainability of marine ecosystems.
Here the focus is on the sustainable governance and economics of marine and coastal systems. The goals and strategies of commercial enterprises, non-governmental and governmental organizations and international institutions are analyzed, alternatives are developed and their effects are evaluated in relation to both organizations and ecosystems involved. This summarized in the learning outcome: to design goals and strategies for the governance and management of sustainable marine ecosystems and aquatic resources.

To respond to the need for expert training in aquaculture health management, the AquaH consortium was formed. This combines the expertise of 4 European Centres of Excellence:
- Ghent University (UGent – coordinator), Belgium
- the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway
- Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) and Universitat de Barcelona (UB), Spain
This 2-year Erasmus Mundus programme builds on established programmes at each of the partner institutes.
The fundamental issues in aquaculture health are addressed during the common module at UGent. Students then choose one of 3 learning lines, looking at aquaculture health issues on different levels:
1. Relationship between the ecosystem and health (NTNU)
2. Disease prevention management and health (WU)
3. Relationship between animal physiology and health (UAB/UB)
Courses, thesis projects and internships follow these paths. All students will study at a minimum of 2 different European partner institutes.
Wageningen University (WU)
The learning line at WU focuses on relevant innovations by studying fish and shellfish nutrition and health. This is mainly in circular aquaculture systems (recirculating aquaculture systems or ponds). Research looks into how nutrition influences health and how novel feeds improve disease resistance; it also considers the latest strategies in terms of activation of the immune system and key therapeutic tools, such as new generation vaccines.
For students following this learning line, the programme will be delivered as part of the existing – specialisation aquaculture. Students completing the programme will be awarded a ‘double’ Master: International ‘AquaH’ Master and WU ‘Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management (MAM)’ Master (specialisation aquaculture).
