Series: Becoming Artificially Intelligent

The rise of AI presents us with radical opportunities, challenges, and choices. How we navigate these, both individually and as an academic community, shapes the future of what it means to be a student, an academic, and a university. This series investigates our academic relationships with AI and how these influence us and our choices. Why is AI so attractive? How do we make AI policy? And what are our personal academic relationships with AI actually like? Join us to examine and shape how we become artificially intelligent.

Irresistible Artificial Intelligence

AI can help us to study, do research and teach. But could there be more to its apparently irresistible attraction? Tonight, we investigate this with philosopher of technology Dr. Nolen Gertz (University of Twente). He will invite us to consider the possibility that technology, including AI, is so attractive because it allows us to avoid deep existential questions at the cost of making our lives less meaningful. Is this true? And if so, how will AI change what it means to us to be a student or academic, and what can we do about it?

About Nolen Gertz

Nolen Gertz is associate professor of applied philosophy. His work investigates the role of technology in everyday life through the lenses of political philosophy, philosophy of technology  and existential phenomenology. His publications on the topic of artificial intelligence include his book ‘Nihilism and Technology’ and a recent article entitled  ‘AI and the machinization of humans: an escape from the burdens of existence’. In his lecture, he will examine the attraction of technologies like  AI through the philosophical lens of Fredrich Nietzsche’s  nihilism.
