SG - China’s Renewables Revolution

In short

Lecture

  • Speaker: Annah Lake Zhu (WUR)

Beyond energy, China contributes roughly a quarter of the planet’s recent greening—more than any other nation—through massive forestry initiatives that span the nation.

This session explores China’s distinct approach to energy and environment in the 21st Century. Through state-led long-term planning, China follows an “eco-developmental” model that treats ecological health and industrial growth as inseparable. It embraces capitalism and technological innovation while remaining deeply sceptical of market individualism.

As a decisive, yet controversial, environmental power in the 21st Century, China offers contemplative fodder—if not always hope—for reimagining sustainable futures in the Anthropocene. This session asks: what might we learn from China's model? And what are its limits, contradictions, and costs?

About series Our Climatic Future - Between Pessimism and Hope

It seems difficult to not become pessimistic in times of an unfolding climate disaster and geopolitical crisis. As our attention is drawn to conflict, war and imperialism, concerns for the climate seem to diminish and the 1.5C degree target is steadily moving out of reach. Where do we draw hope from in such desperate times? Join us to explore different strategies and sources of inspiration for bridging pessimism and hope to build a more sustainable future.
