Planet: human health in a changing world

The "Planet" section of our work broadens our understanding of health beyond human beings. We focus on inter-species health and wellbeing and how human health intersects with animal health, climate change, and biodiversity loss.
Our initiatives aim to improve human health and reduce health inequities within the context of planetary challenges. We work towards sustainable solutions that protect the planet and promote the health of all species. Join us in our commitment to creating a healthier world for future generations.
Our projects
GDRS-Reveal
GDRS-Reveal: Geo-enabled surveillance system for antimalarial resistance in Africa
Climate change is affecting where and how malaria spreads, while resistance to antimalarial medicines is making the disease harder to control. This project develops a new way to track where drug-resistant malaria parasites emerge and spread in Ghana. By combining malaria samples with geographic, health and demographic data, researchers can create a detailed picture of resistance patterns. Using the open-source Reveal platform, the project aims to help health programmes detect emerging resistance earlier, target interventions more effectively and protect the medicines we rely on to treat malaria. Contact: Christina Riley.

KIN-ACT
Accelerating Just Climate Transitions in Urban Regions (KIN-ACT)
How can neighbourhoods become greener and more climate-resilient in ways that are fair and inclusive?
KIN-ACT explores this question in neighbourhoods across the Netherlands, with the our chairgroup focusing on Nijmegen. Researchers work together with residents, municipalities and local organisations to understand how people can meaningfully participate in climate transitions. In Nijmegen, the project supports the development of a Green Corridor through workshops and co-creation, aiming for a healthy living environment and a fair distribution of green space. The project will also develop practical tools and lessons to help municipalities involve communities in climate action. Contact: Marthe Derkzen.
