The Environmental Sciences MSc programme of Wageningen University is an international programme containing one year of course work and one year of research. It is thesis-oriented with the individual research project (thesis track) as its core. Compulsory elements are kept at a minimum, thus enabling the coursework to be tailored to the wishes and needs of the individual student. Study adviser and thesis supervisor both assist the student in selecting the most relevant courses from what Wageningen University has to offer.

Aim of the programme

The Environmental Sciences MSc programme of Wageningen University is an international programme offering its students advanced and specialized academic training emphasising the development of:

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • In-depth knowledge of a wide range of environmental and sustainability issues.

Graduates from the Environmental Sciences MSc programme are well equipped to continue academic training as a PhD student or to start or continue a professional career in applied research, consultancies, governmental and non-governmental organisations requiring independent scientific performance.

Evidently, research quality is of major concern for the thesis-oriented MSc programme Environmental Sciences. Wageningen University is a specialised university that is internationally leading in its field of specialisation. The productivity, impact and excellence of its research give Wageningen University an excellent position in the field of "Agriculture and Environment Sciences". This is reflected in the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities (HEEACT), also known as NTU ranking. Since the introduction of this field-based bibliometric ranking in 2008, Wageningen University has consistently been leading all European universities. The latest ranking again shows Wageningen University being on the same level as the best American universities.

Target group

The MSc Environmental Sciences aims at attracting recently qualified BSc graduates with basic academic training as well as mid-career professionals. Initially, the annual enrolment numbered around 70: 20 Dutch students and 50 from abroad, representing over 20 nationalities. Over the years the influx of students has increased significantly, the most recent academic years showing an enrolment of around 130 (55 Dutch and 75 from abroad). Since the start of the programme in September 2002, up to and including August 2016, 1004 students have graduated, representing 85 nationalities. 52% of the graduates are female.
