Alumnus Laura Schijven - MSc Molecular Life Sciences

"During my MSc, I wanted to focus on characterisation and imaging techniques. Especially the practical courses helped me develop valuable skills. My internship allowed me to dive into nanomedicine, which is the topic of my work today. I now work at Ardena Oss, and I love the diversity during a working week. It not only involves research, but also production and contact with clients."

I was surprised that nanomedicines were already on the market!

Career in a nutshell

"I chose the Physical Chemistry specialisation for my MSc because I wanted to focus on characterisation and imaging techniques. I did my MSc thesis at the Laboratory of BioNanoTechnology on combining surface chemistry and microcontactprintring for removal of antibiotic resistant bacteria from wastewater. Afterwards, I did my internship at Verona University. Here I did a project at the Nanomaterial Research Group and focused on the incorporation of lanthanide ions into metal-organic frameworks for nanomedicine applications. I then did a PhD at Biobased Chemistry & Technology and BioNanoTechnology, which further helped me to become an independent researcher."

"Currently, I work at Ardena Oss, a company that supports other companies in bringing molecules to clinics. Ardena not only focuses on active pharmaceutical ingredients, but also nanomedicines. I was surprised that nanomedicines were already on the market, so the opportunity for me to work at a pharmaceutical company which produces nanomedicines is amazing! I am involved in the Process Research & Development team in nanomedicines, and I love the diversity in my work. One of the things I do is research, which is like a thesis. The research methods courses helped me develop practical skills, which I can apply in my work. Next to research, I am involved in the production, which means bigger scales, and I keep contact with customers."

My advice:

"I would advise students to think ahead when choosing courses. What techniques do you like and which courses will further develop your skills? But most of all, enjoy your student time!"
