For who is this course fitting?
To be able to participate in the course, you are expected to have at least a BSc level of education in Food Science and Technology. A related field, such as Chemical Engineering or Biotechnology, is also possible.
We recommend to first follow the first module of this course:
- Product and Process Design: Principles of Consumer-Oriented Food Product Design.
The language of instruction of this course is in English.
Learning outcomes
- Apply different creative thinking techniques for the purpose of new food product development.
- Explain the various stages of the new product development process.
- Design and evaluate new product concepts from a consumer-oriented, company, and competitor perspective
- Construct a project plan for the performance and communication of new product development
Programme details
The online course on Product and Process Design is divided into four modules. Throughout the four modules of this course, you'll learn the essential methods and strategies needed to create innovative and appealing food products.
In this second module, you will work on one big project that is divided into multiple smaller assignments. You will develop skills in the idea generation process in new product development. A combination of scientific literature and practical tasks will lead you through different stages in the idea generation process:
- Orientation on the task
- Targeting a consumer segment
- Generate ideas using various creativity techniques, based on your orientation task and the selected consumer segment
- Evaluation, screening, and a selection of ideas
- Write a project plan of the selected idea
The main objective is to enhance T-shaped skills. These skills will enable you to solve complex technological problems in one specific area. They will also equip you to tackle broader challenges involving multiple disciplines.
The course is fully online and involves studying e-learning materials with practical assignments.

Certification
Upon successful completion, a digital Micro-credentials certificate (EduBadge) with 3 study credits (ECTS) is issued. The EduBadge certifies the learning outcomes of short-term learning experiences, marking the quality of a course.
Examination
Examination of this course consists out of a group and individual assignments. Participation in the individual assignments is a mandatory part of the course. If you decide not to participate in the assignments, you do not qualify for a certificate and/or micro-credentials. The assignments are included in the course price. The assignments need to be finalized by the end of the course.
Capstone project
When you complete two courses, you can start a capstone project in consultation with a Wageningen expert in the field. It is a tailor-made project where you will write a short paper about your results and conclusions. During this work, you will be coached by an expert. Price: €1,230,-.
