Would you like to be able to speak Dutch with your colleagues, supervisor, friends or neighbours? What about travelling by public transport, ordering in cafés or restaurants or shopping in the Netherlands? Would you also like to learn about Dutch customs and traditions? If so, our Basic Dutch 2 course is perfect for you.This course is a continuation of Basic Dutch 1, but you can also take it if you already have some basic understanding of the language.
Who is this course suitable for?
This course is geared towards international employees, PhD candidates or expats with little knowledge of the Dutch language and who are interested in learning the language for social purposes.
Admission requirements

From on the way to A1 to A1
Basic Dutch 2 requires prior knowledge of Dutch. If you have completed Basic Dutch 1, you can participate in Basic Dutch 2. To be sure this course is suitable for your level and study goals, please contact us at into@wur.nl.
If German is your native language, we offer you the opportunity to enroll directly in Basic Dutch 2, provided you study Chapters 1 through 5 of the course book beforehand.
This course will help you reach language level A1. Read more about the language levels (CEFR).
What will this course teach you?
Skills
Once you have completed the course, you will be able to:
- ask about arrival and departure times;
- ask where the bus stops;
- book a trip;
- make a hotel room reservation;
- talk about your house;
- ask for someone's address;
- talk about things that happened in the past/past events;
- talk about your holidays;
- order in a café or restaurant;
- make a reservation at a restaurant;
- talk about (your favourite) food and drinks;
- ask about clothing;
- describe colours;
- express your dissatisfaction about something;
- make conversation in a store.
Grammar
Grammar is always discussed in a communicative context and in functional situations.
For example: When you learn to talk about things that happened in the past, you simultaneously learn about the voltooid tegenwoordige tijd because knowledge of this grammatical concept is relevant to clearly talk or write about the past.
This course will also cover Dutch pronunciation and interesting aspects of Dutch culture.
The lecturer will speak Dutch as much as possible during the course.

This course is offered several times a year in two variants: the standard track and the fast track. In addition, we offer an Intensive Summer course Basic Dutch 2.

The course price does not include course materials.
The course consists of 14 lessons of 1.5 hours per week. You should also allow for 1 to 1.5 hours (standard track) or 2 to 3 hours (fast track) of self-study per week to reach the desired level. The maximum number of participants per group is 16.
If you register for an online course, you follow all classes online using the Virtual Classroom in Brightspace. If you choose a face-to-face course, all classes will take place at Wageningen Campus.

After the course you will receive a certificate from Wageningen in’to Languages, provided you have attended at least 80% of the classes. Would you like to continue improving your language skills? With this certificate you can continue with Intermediate Dutch 1.
