With the intensive summer course Basic Dutch 1, you'll be fully immersed in the Dutch language for two weeks. Would you like to learn Dutch in a short time and be able to converse with your colleagues, friends, or neighbors? And how about reading labels in the supermarket, asking where to find something, or chatting with your neighbors? Would you also like to learn more about what's typically Dutch, both inside and outside the university walls? Then the intensive summer course Basic Dutch 1 is perfect for you.

Who is this course suitable for?

Target group

The course is for international employees, expats or PhD candidates who have little or no knowledge of Dutch and want to learn the language for social purposes.

From 0 halfway to A1

You don't need any prior knowledge of Dutch for the intensive summer course Basic Dutch 1. To be sure this course is suitable for your level and study goals, please contact us at into@wur.nl.

If German is your native language, we offer you the option of immediately enrolling in Basic Dutch 2, provided you study Chapters 1 through 5 of the course book beforehand.

This course will help you reach language level A1. Read more about the language levels (CEFR).

Approach
You'll learn to communicate in Dutch. All skills are covered: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. We'll focus on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and Dutch customs and traditions. Reading and writing will be done largely through independent study.

What will the course cover?

Skills

After this course you can:

  • Introduce yourself/someone else;
  • Say where you're from;
  • Ask where someone is from;
  • Spell your name, address, and town;
  • Ask and tell how you're doing;
  • Ask and tell what you're studying;
  • Tell about your hobbies;
  • Invite someone over;
  • Say what you like/don't like;
  • Ask what someone enjoys doing;
  • Tell about your family;
  • Describe someone's character and appearance;
  • Tell about activities you do during the day;
  • Ask and tell what time it is;
  • Ask and tell when something is happening;
  • Make appointments;
  • Have a conversation in a shop;
  • Ask and tell where people/things are;
  • Ask about the price of things.

Grammar

After this course, you will know:

  • numbers up to 100;
  • the days of the week;
  • the months of the year.

Grammar is secondary to communication skills and vocabulary. Only basic grammar principles such as sentence structure, present tense verb conjugation, negation, question structure, and pronouns will be covered.

The course also covers Dutch pronunciation and interesting aspects of Dutch culture.

The teacher will use Dutch as much as possible during the course.
