Multifunctional agriculture is reshaping the role of farmers in society. An increasing number of agricultural entrepreneurs are combining food production with social services, such as green care, on-farm education, direct sales, agri-tourism, and nature conservation. This approach creates business models that generate not only economic returns but also social and environmental value.

This business model is expanding rapidly. More farmers are exploring new income streams that connect them directly with the public. At the request of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, and in collaboration with agricultural organisations, Wageningen University & Research is assessing the growth potential of multifunctional agriculture through to 2035.

To monitor this development, we publish an annual Monitor of Turnover Trends in Multifunctional Agriculture. This is complemented every few years by the Short Supply Chains Monitor, which provides insights into the economic and societal impact of direct sales from farmers to consumers, such as through farm shops, markets, or local food cooperatives.
