From dairy farming to horticulture, and from animal feed to fisheries: every agri-food sector faces the challenge and opportunity of becoming more sustainable. Wageningen University & Research supports sector organisations and policymakers with monitoring, insights, and policy advice to help build a more sustainable and resilient future of food production.

Approach

Achieving sustainable food production requires more than ambition: it demands applicable solutions grounded in science. While today’s food systems supply safe and affordable products, they also drive water and soil pollution, biodiversity loss and greenhouse gas emissions. The European Green Deal and Farm to Fork Strategy set clear targets, from reducing pesticide and fertiliser use to expanding organic farming. Dutch policies go further, with strict measures on nitrogen, methane and water protection.

Such transitions bring tough choices. Farming practices, land use and logistics must adapt, while farmers still need to earn a fair income. Globally, many regions also face the challenge of improving sustainability with weaker institutions.

Wageningen University & Research supports every sector by assessing the impact of proposed measures, calculating costs and benefits, and developing innovative solutions and future scenarios. In this way, we help build food systems that are both environmentally and socially sustainable.
