Family Homegardens and diet of coffee producing domestic groups in Sierra Madre, Chiapas, Mexico : Huertos familiares y alimentación de grupos domésticos cafetaleros en la Sierra Madre de Chiapas, México

Summary

The socioeconomic characteristics, homegardens and diet of 36 domestic groups were analyzed, which are devoted to organic coffee growing in nine localities of the Sierra Madre in Chiapas; with the objective of analyzing changes, trends and permanence that have taken place in the homegardens in relation to the processes of specialization and intensification of coffee cultivation. In homegardens, there were predominant plants of the herbaceous and shrub strata, with a large number of ornamental and introduced species. Between generations they have decreased in size, abundance of plants and uses, due to the introduction of the coffee drying courtyard, land succession and house building.
