A strong asset of Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) is the combination of high-tech animal facilities in combination with specialised laboratory facilities. We have laboratories available at different biosafety levels that allows us to work on highly contagious pathogens.
Different biosafety levels
All of our laboratories are at least suitable for BSL-2 organisms. A laboratory at BSL-3 is also available as well as laboratories under high-containment regime that allow us to work on veterinary BSL-4 organisms like foot-and-mouth disease and classical swine fever. At all biosafety levels, genetically modified organisms (GMO) can be worked with.
Specialised laboratories, with state-of-the-art equipment, in the following areas are available:
- Microbiology: bacteriology & virology
- Pathology & histology
- Clinical chemistry & haematology
- Cell culture
- Batch control & extraneous agents testing
