Epidemiology and data-driven innovation in animal disease research

About this expertise
In short- Epidemiological modelling & risk assessment
- Data-driven outbreak detection & decision support
- AI and robotics in animal health
- FAIR data sharing and innovation
In the bioveterinary research domain, we combine epidemiology with data-driven innovation to better understand, predict and control animal diseases. By integrating models, surveillance data and advanced digital tools, we support decision-making that reduces risks, improves animal resilience and strengthens One Health strategies.
Epidemiology is the foundation for managing infectious animal diseases. We design and implement models to map the spread of (animal) pathogens, evaluate control options and inform policy makers during outbreaks of notifiable diseases, such as avian influenza, foot-and-mouth disease and swine fever. Our experts conduct risk analyses for various transmission routes and develop surveillance systems that enable early detection and rapid response strategies.
Data-driven innovation opens new possibilities. Using artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and advanced data analytics, we extract insights from complex datasets to enable faster outbreak detection and create decision support tools for governments, industries and farmers. We ensure that data can be safely shared and reused by applying FAIR data principles and building digital platforms.
These approaches strengthen animal health, reduce the societal and economic impacts of outbreaks and contribute to sustainable One Health solutions.
