Introduction

Connecting cities and rural areas to create resilient regions where food, water, nature, and people thrive together.

The growing interdependence between rural and urban areas calls for integrated solutions that go beyond traditional boundaries. At Wageningen University & Research (WUR), we explore how flows of food, water, energy, and people link cities with their surrounding landscapes — and how these connections can be made more sustainable.

Our research focuses on regional transitions that strengthen both urban and rural resilience. We analyse land-use dynamics, governance arrangements, and value chains to understand how regional cooperation can foster climate adaptation, biodiversity restoration, and circular resource use.

By co-developing knowledge with policymakers, local communities, and businesses, WUR supports strategies for inclusive, sustainable regional development — where cities and rural areas are no longer opposites, but partners in shaping a healthy future.
