Introduction

Sustainable forest management is essential to balance carbon storage, biodiversity, and the growing demand for wood and land.

At Wageningen University & Research, we study and design forest systems that are resilient to climate change and capable of providing multiple ecosystem services. Our work connects insights from forest ecology, modelling, and management to support decision-making at national, European and global levels.

We develop data-driven models and indicators to assess forest dynamics, carbon sequestration and biodiversity outcomes, and advise on strategies for climate-smart forestry, sustainable wood production and forest restoration. By linking science, policy and practice, we help governments, companies and landowners strengthen forest resilience and sustainability — from natural forests to urban green areas.
